Remember competing against your peers in class to locate a particular word within a huge hardback dictionary. Dictionary have changed over the years and are still used by language learners everywhere.

When you are learning a new language, bilingual dictionaries can help you find the translations you need and examples of sentences that correspond to your native tongue. It is necessary to immerse yourself in a monolingual mindset and environment, even if it’s scary. Monolingual dictionaries are more difficult to understand at first but they help in the end.

This list will help you in your language study.

Bilingual Dictionaries

  1. WordReference : Provides translations of English, Spanish and French. This is a great tool for searching single words and common phrases. It also allows you to check conjugations as well as browse the forums.
  2. Linguee offers translations in English, Spanish and French. Also available are German, Russian and Russian. This is great for searching more specific phrases. It searches many bilingual websites and finds you the real translations you are looking for. The app is also free.
  3. Bab.la There are 28 languages that you can choose from English. It’s hard to not find what you want. The most common phrases can be found by searching for a single word.
  4. ProZ.com : An online database of user-contributed technical terms and phrases.
  5. Wiktionary : This one is probably familiar to you, as it has been built by people around the globe.

Monolingual Dictionaries

  1. TheFreeDictionary : Test yourself with a monolingual dictionaries that are available in 15 different languages. Its flexible search options may come in handy when searching for English words that are vaguely remembered.
  2. Larousse : They also offer bilingual dictionaries but, if you’re looking for an authoritative monolingual French dictionary then give them a try.
  3. Duden : A stylish search engine for German language learners.
  4. RAE : A Spanish monolingual dictionary by the Real Academia Espanola.
  5. Multitran: For Russian learners.
  6. Dicio This is an English-Portuguese dictionary created by Brazilian computer scientists. Around 400,000 words are included!
